The 2020 World Series

Baseball, often referred to as “America’s national pastime”, was created in 1839 by Abner Doubleday. Although it seems like such a trivial matter, baseball has actually had an extremely active role in shaping our nation to what it is today. Beginning at around the time of the civil war, the game of baseball reflects and supports the values of an American lifestyle. It is also used as an indicator to compare how far our society has advanced in the aspects of culture, economics, and technology.

The world series was introduced in 1903. In order for a team to become world series champions, they need to be the first to 4 win games. In 2017, the Dodgers competed against the Houston Astros in the world series. Although it was later discovered that the Astros had been cheating by using electric devices to read signs, the Dodgers were not awarded the title. Instead of the world series ending the no title drought for the Dodgers as it was supposed to, they received second place, many fans arguing that it had been stolen from them.

In the first game of the 2020 series, the Dodgers won by a landslide. Glasnow from the Rays and Kershaw from the Dodgers were the starting pitchers of the first game in the series. Glasnow choked throughout the entire game with 6 walks over the course of four and one-third innings. Kershaw on the other hand performed exceptionally well with 8 strikeouts and allowed only one run over the course of six innings. After the two pitchers went head to head, the final score turned out to be 8 to 3. With that, the Dodgers managed to secure a 1 to 0 lead over the Rays in overall games.

Due to the fact that the Dodgers lost the second game 4 to 6, the Rays were able to manage to even out the score in overall games with the Dodgers and created a 1 to 1 ratio between the two teams. The Dodgers won the third game 6 to 2 and created an overall score of a 2 to 1 lead over the Rays.

Although the Dodgers lost the fourth game, it was truly one of the most eventful games of this entire series. The Dodgers were leading 7 to 6 in the 9th inning. However, at the bottom of the 9th, with 2 outs and 2 on base, the Rays stepped up and hit a ball into the field. Taylor, a Dodgers player, fumbled the ball at centerfield and the Rays made the play into an even 8 to 8. To make matters worse, when Taylor threw the ball to home, Smith, the Dodgers catcher, missed it and the Rays came home, creating a devastating 7 to 8 loss for the Dodgers.

Game 5, although the Dodgers won, was not nearly as eventful as the last and the Dodgers won 4 to 2 which created a 3 to 2 lead against the Rays. In the final game, the Dodgers were down 0 to 1 until the bottom of the 6th. Robert Cash, the Rays manager, subbed Snell and it was all downhill for the Rays from there. Many fans of the Rays still look at this as the determining factor for the Ray’s loss. After a series of mistakes from the Rays in the bottom of the 6th, the Dodgers gained a 2 to 1 lead. Finally, in the bottom of the 8th, Betts hit a home run for the Dodgers and the score became 3 to 1. Urias, a Dodgers pitcher, closed the game perfectly. The 6th game marked the end of the 2020 world series and the Dodgers beat the Rays 4 games to 2. After competing in 20 world series games, this year’s game marked the 21st, the Dodgers were finally able to win their 7th world series championship title and end their 32 year drought adding another title to LA’s champion filled city.
