What is Breast Cancer?

Breast Cancer is a type of cancer where a cell around your breast grows out of control. Breast Cancer is usually among women but can happen to men which is a rare occurrence. There are two types of Breast Cancer which are invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma in both men and women. Although Breast Cancer is scary it is a low chance for both men and women to get it. In women, they have a 13% chance of getting Breast Cancer but for men, it is a 1 in 833 chance of them getting it. Even if you get Breast Cancer you still have a good chance of beating Breast Cancer and the chances of you beating it are high for both men and women when caught at an early stage.

What is Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is on from October 1st till the end of the month. Breast Cancer Awareness Month gives awareness to Breast Cancer. Breast Cancer is important to have awareness because many people don’t know about Breast Cancer and how it can be detected early. Breast Cancer Awareness Month helps raise funds for research of the causes. These funds will help with early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and cure. Many people wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness because it is in support of Breast Cancer survivors, patients, and those who have passed from Breast Cancer.

Events For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Currently, at Valencia, the finance window has been selling pink T-shirts for $10 that you can still buy while supplies last. You can wear the Valencia pink T-shirts or anything pink on Wednesdays throughout October to show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month! On October 8th Valencia High School showed their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by going all pink during the Valencia football game. You can still celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month by joining in marathons around your area or if you don’t like running you can donate money to charities that help research Breast Cancer. If you plan to donate money to a charity, a reliable charity you should donate to is nationalbreastcancer.org. Also, you can educate people by researching Breast Cancer and telling people what Breast Cancer is and ways they can be protected from Breast Cancer like early screening.

How to Lower Your Risk?

You can lower your risk of getting Breast Cancer by making your lifestyle healthier. One way to start lowering your risk is to maintain a healthy weight. Being physically active has shown that it can lower your chance of getting Breast Cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, they recommend you should get 150-300 minutes of moderate exercise or 75-150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity.  Lower your intake on consuming alcohol and doing so can help lower the risk of getting Breast Cancer. The next way you can lower the risk of Breast Cancer is by following a healthy eating pattern like eating your fruits and vegetables and avoiding junk food. If Breast Cancer runs in your family make sure to tell your doctor about it as they will provide you with early screening. If Breast Cancer runs in your family, tell a doctor so they can help you by giving you early screening and monitoring. If you are healthy it doesn’t mean you have a 0% chance of getting Breast Cancer you can still get it even if you are healthy. It is important to talk with your doctors for early screening for breast cancer or any type of cancer because when caught at an early stage it can save your life.
